Grounds for Healing

Cultivating Purpose Through Soil and Support

A Sanctuary for Veterans to Grow, Heal, and Thrive

At Grounds for Healing, we believe that true recovery happens when hands connect with soil, minds engage with purpose, and hearts connect in community. We offer more than a program—we offer a peer support pathway for honorably discharged veterans, especially those navigating PTSD, anxiety, depression, or the challenges of transitioning to civilian life.

Our program is built on a dual-pillar model: Wellness Horticulture and Vocational Mastery, wrapped in a supportive brotherhood and sisterhood of peers who truly understand.

🌱 Wellness Horticulture | Growth Through Nature

  • Structured Horticultural Support Sessions: Guided by the calming rhythms of nature, veterans engage in hands-on activities in our vineyards, gardens, and orchards. Planting, pruning, and harvesting become mindful practices that reduce stress, improve focus, and restore a sense of peace and personal agency.

  • Nature as Co-Support: The serene 20-acre campus in Nacogdoches County provides a quiet, expansive backdrop for reflection and growth, far from the triggers of everyday life.

🎓 Vocational Training & Industry-Aligned Certification

We provide tangible, marketable skills for a sustainable future. Our vocational training is professional, practical, and intentionally designed to align with Texas environmental standards and agricultural industry needs.

Core Curriculum | Aligned with Texas Standards & Sustainable Mission

Our hands-on training curriculum is developed in consultation with agricultural experts and designed around key Texas environmental and agricultural standards, including those set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

  • Water Conservation & Soil Health: Learn science-based practices for efficient irrigation, erosion control, and building healthy soil—the foundation of sustainable farming.

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Master environmentally responsible strategies for managing pests and diseases, reducing reliance on chemicals.

  • Organic Farming Principles: Gain experience in chemical-free cultivation, composting, and ecosystem balance.

Specialized Skills in Viticulture

As a program funded by our vineyard, we offer unique, in-depth training in sustainable viticulture:

  • Vineyard Establishment & Management: From site selection and trellising to canopy management and harvest planning.

  • Seasonal Vineyard Operations: Participate in the full annual cycle of a working vineyard on our 20-acre campus.

  • The Business of Wine Grapes: Understand the agricultural economics behind vineyard operations.

Entrepreneurship & Farm Business

For veterans interested in starting or managing an agricultural enterprise, we cover essential farm business basics, including:

  • Business planning and budgeting for small farms
  • Marketing strategies for direct sales and wholesale
  • Navigating sustainable agriculture certifications and incentives

Building Pathways to Careers & Credentials

Our program prepares and supports veterans in pursuing official, industry-respected credentials that enhance employability. We provide guidance and preparation for certifications such as:

  • Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Private Pesticide Applicator License
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) exam prerequisites
  • We are developing partnerships to offer training modules that contribute toward TCEQ Water/Wastewater Operator licensing requirements—a high-demand career field in Texas.

All vocational training is delivered with the same core purpose as our therapeutic programs: to cultivate purpose, foster resilience, and strengthen our community through the transformative power of sustainable agriculture.

🤝 The Brotherhood/Sisterhood | Peer Support Groups

The core of healing is connection. Our peer-led support circles are safe spaces where veterans can share experiences, challenges, and victories without judgment.

  • Shared Language: Facilitated by veterans and mental health professionals, these groups operate on mutual respect and shared understanding.

  • Goal-Oriented Fellowship: Discussions often integrate lessons from the vineyard—resilience, patience, nurturing growth—providing powerful metaphors for personal journeys.

Program Structure & Vision

  • Format: Veterans join 8-week cohorts, meeting weekly for a blend of training, and peer support. This cohort model builds tight-knit, accountable communities.

  • Our Growing Vision: We are building a future where Grounds for Healing graduates become:
    • Leaders in Texas’s sustainable agriculture movement.
    • Mentors for incoming veteran cohorts.
    • Entrepreneurs launching their own small farms or vineyard consultancies.
    • Advocates for horticultural Wellness, expanding this vital model to serve more communities.

This is more than a program—it’s a new mission. One rooted in growth, dignity, and purpose.
