The Family Harvest Table

Nutrition, Wellness & Intergenerational Connection

Purpose: To strengthen family bonds, intergenerational connection, and food sovereignty through a hands-on journey that transforms fresh ingredients into shared meals and lasting memories. We believe that when families grow, cook, and eat together, they build healthier lives and a stronger community fabric.

Who We Serve: Families of all structures in Texas—parents, grandparents, caregivers, and children—who seek to deepen their relationship with food, health, and each other.

Our Three-Phase Journey | Grow. Cook. Share.

The Family Harvest Table is not a single class—it’s a seasonal experience that guides families through the full story of their food, rooted in the rhythms of our sustainable farm.

🌱 Phase 1: The Harvest – Where Food Begins

Families start in the soil, connecting directly to the source of their nourishment.

  • Seasonal Harvest Days: Hands-on opportunities to pick ripe tomatoes, crisp greens, fragrant herbs, and vibrant vegetables from our teaching gardens and orchards.
  • Farm Education: While harvesting, families learn about seasonal eating, organic growing practices, and the journey from seed to table—fostering appreciation for local, fresh food.
  • Intergenerational Learning: Grandparents share traditional knowledge, parents model curiosity, and children experience the joy of pulling carrots from the earth.

👩‍🍳 Phase 2: The Kitchen – Where Skills Are Built

Back in our teaching kitchen, harvest bounty becomes delicious, nutritious meals.

  • Hands-On Cooking Classes: Led by nutrition educators and local chefs, families work together to wash, chop, season, and cook the very ingredients they harvested. Recipes are simple, budget-friendly, and adaptable—designed to be recreated at home.
  • Nutrition Literacy Workshops: Beyond recipes, we teach practical life skills:
    • Meal Planning & Budgeting: How to stretch groceries, reduce waste, and eat well on a budget.
    • Label Reading & Smart Shopping: Understanding ingredients, spotting hidden sugars, and making informed choices.
    • Food Preservation Basics: Simple techniques like blanching, freezing, and making herb oils to extend the life of seasonal produce.

🪑 Phase 3: The Table – Where Community Gathers

The journey culminates in the most important step: sharing the meal together.

  • Community Suppers: On a monthly basis, all participating families—alongside veterans from Grounds for Healing and youth from the Agri-Science Academy—gather for a family-style dinner under our pavilion or in our dining hall. These are more than meals; they are celebrations of community.
  • Intentional Connection: Tables are set to encourage conversation. Place cards might include conversation starters: “What’s a food memory from your childhood?” or “What are you growing this season?”
  • Storytelling & Legacy: Elders share food traditions, veterans share stories of service and renewal, and youth share what they’ve learned in the garden. This intergenerational exchange weaves a stronger, more resilient community network, reducing isolation and building mutual support.

Why This Program Matters | Addressing Core Needs

The Family Harvest Table simultaneously strengthens:

  • Food Literacy: Knowing where food comes from and how to prepare it.
  • Financial Literacy: Cooking economically and reducing food waste.
  • Social Literacy: Building confidence, connection, and community across generations.

We don’t just teach families how to cook—we empower them with the skills, confidence, and relationships to nourish themselves and each other for a lifetime.

Join us at the table

This program is a living expression of our "Cultivating Community, Harvesting Hope" mission:

  • The fresh ingredients are grown through our sustainable vineyard and farm operations, which fund the program.
  • The intergenerational model reflects our core value of serving veterans, youth, and families together.
  • The community built around the table reinforces that true wellness is rooted in both nutrition and connection.

Program Rhythm: Monthly workshops aligned with seasonal harvests (e.g., "Spring Greens & Salads" in April, "Summer Salsa & Grilling" in July, "Fall Soups & Preserves" in October). Each seasonal series culminates in a larger Quarterly Community Feast open to the wider public.
